So, you've heard of Product Photography before, but what does it mean for you?
We've all seen product photography. Whether it was in the store on a big poster, in a magazine, or nearly every time you visit any website that has ads. It's EVERYWHERE! But why do brands invest so much money into these images? Well, that's easy!
BRAND RECOGNITION.
(PC: Ben Pigao)
Brands are so easily recognized by the styling and messaging of their product photography and it's effective when engaging with their target audience. Just like this Nike ad above, the model and their surroundings are all part of the influence for that target audience.
Lifestyle Product Photography helps customers relate the product to their everyday lives.
Here are some key points to consider for your next lifestyle product photo shoot!
No model? No problem! If you don't have the budget to get a model to showcase your product, you can easily use your own hand/body to create great photos. Think about how your product will be used once it's in the consumers' possession - how will it be consumed or applied? Is it a great on-the-go item? Could they use it for a picnic? What about how it will look in their home? Here are some examples of work I've done to portray these settings without a face model.
Use a model to relate to the target audience. I know I said you don't need a model for your photos, and that's still true, but....they can make a huge difference on engagement metrics! Why? Let's use Dove as an example. Over the years, they've started to use real women from different age groups and body types in their ads to ensure their target audience knows who they are. Based on the packaging alone, it feels more like a 'high-end' brand. But using these different models in their campaigns, their brand messaging becomes more clear. So, think about your target demographic when it comes to audience to determine what kind of model would best represent your brand. Young or middle-aged? Skinny or curvy? Male or female? Tattoos and piercings? Here's an example of photographs I did with a model for a young, inclusive startup company.
Use simple props. Nearly every lifestyle shoot revolves around the props in the setup. Props don't need to be fancy to paint a great picture! I almost always am able to find mine at local thrift shops and discount craft stores. Some prop examples are textured fabric like a blanket, candles, flowers, books, or even just a countertop for the background! The props all depend on the type of product you're photographing. Here's an example of simple props I used to create a warm, inviting feeling for candle images.
It might seem complicated and like too much work, but it's worth the investment!
If you're struggling to find inspiration or know how to set up a photoshoot for your product, utilize Pinterest and YouTube! There are a ton of great photographers who share their work on there for nearly every time of product.
